Newsboys steps up with Chuck Taylor brand Print Email

Inpop Records' pop/rock band Newsboys recently signed a deal to launch its own line of Converse Chuck Taylor All Star shoes--the first time the shoes have been branded with a Christian music artist's logo.

A cultural icon, Chuck Taylors have featured the names of famous artists, including The Grateful Dead, The Who and Ozzy Osbourne. "American Athletics has placed shoes on the feet of Mel Gibson, Whitney Houston and Bob Dylan," said Gary Church, owner of American Athletics, a licensed Converse distributor.

Church Music by David Crowder Band (Sparrow Records/EMI CMG Distribution) remained atop the SoundScan's Christian/Gospel music Christian retail chart for sales the week ending Oct. 4, while One Night With the King (20th Century Fox Home Entertainment/Word Distribution) still held the top spot of the SoundScan's Christian Videos list.

Cook names Global Mission president Print Email

David C. Cook has announced the appointment of Eric Thurman as president of Global Mission for the Colorado Springs, Colo.-based nonprofit publisher.

Thurman is widely regarded as an expert in international philanthropy, both Christian and humanitarian. Before joining Cook, Thurman was CEO of Geneva Global Inc., which researched and placed grants in more than half of the countries of the world, company officials said.

Joyce Meyer recognized for service Print Email

Bible teacher and best-selling author Joyce Meyer has been recognized with a special resolution for outstanding humanitarian and community service by the city of St. Louis.

During a special worship service at the St. Louis Dream Center on Oct. 11, Meyer accepted the resolution from City Alderman Antonio French and delivered a message. "We're both humbled and honored by this recognition of our steadfast commitment and efforts to make a tangible difference in the lives of our neighbors and residents throughout the city and region," she said.

‘Christmas Carol’ offers ‘redemption story’ Print Email

Christian retailers have a greater-than-usual opportunity to help promote the true meaning of Christmas for two reasons, according to author Stephen Skelton.

The Nov. 6 arrival in theaters of Disney's A Christmas Carol, starring Jim Carrey in an adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic, comes at a time when people are more ready than ever to reflect on the largely unknown spiritual foundations of the story, he said.

Jeremy Camp, Brandon Heath and the sister duo Mary Mary have been nominated in the Contemporary Inspirational Favorite Artist category of the American Music Awards (AMA).

Mary Mary, who won Favorite Inspirational/Christian Contemporary Artist in 2005, was also nominated for Favorite Band, Duo or Group in the Soul/Rhythm & Blues category. Mary Mary has already been recognized this year with a GRAMMY, Dove Award and NAACP Image Award for the album The Sound (Columbia Records/Provident-Integrity Distribution).

Newsweek magazine has praised the recently released Glo Bible (Zondervan), the latest software product aiming to marry the Scriptures with new technologies.

In a Web-exclusive column on Newsweek.com titled "Goodbye to Gideon," religion writer Lisa Miller details a meeting with Nelson Saba, creator of Glo, and profiles the new multimedia product--pondering if it's "the beginning of the end of the Word."
