altTwo more publishers have announced layoffs in the light of the economic downturn.

David C. Cook let go 29 people in a late February move impacting its U.S. operations in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Elgin, Ill. The company's Canadian Distribution unit and the Kingsway music subsidiary in the United Kingdom were not affected.

Suppliers offer 'bailout' specials Print Email

altAs cash-strapped consumers continue to keep a tight check on their wallets in the sliding economy, several Christian suppliers, publishers and distributors have launched special promotions designed to help bookstores.

Retailers welcomed the offers-such as apparel company Gardenfire's "Bailout Package"-which they say have helped maintain and even boost sales in an uncertain economic climate.

IVP names director of digital publishing Print Email

InterVarsity Press (IVP) has named Sally Sampson Craft as director of digital publishing. Craft has worked in IVP's Marketing and Sales and Creative Services departments for more than 20 years, most currently as the senior e-commerce and communications manager. She has also served several terms on the Gospelcom.net advisory group.

In her new role, Craft will offer leadership for understanding, championing and implementing current and emerging digital strategies. IVP Publisher Bob Fryling said Craft "has a wonderful combination of technical savvy, creative instincts and spiritual maturity that will add to our leadership team and our publishing house."

CLASSeminars Inc., which trains authors, speakers and leaders, has named Gerry Wakeland of Albuquerque, N.M., president of the corporation

Wakeland has served in several ministry positions, including women's ministry director at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, Calif. CLASSeminars was founded by Florence Littauer--speaker and author of more than 40 books, including Wired That Way (Regal Books, 2006).

 
Wife of Baker's director of human resources dies Print Email

Ann Baker, wife of Baker Publishing Group Director of Human Resources Dan Baker, died March 5 after sustaining a severe brain injury in a car accident Jan.16. She was 35.

Baker's funeral was held March 10 at Grace Episcopal Church in Grand Rapids, Mich. She was survived by her husband and children, Adam and Ingrid, as well as her mother, brother and grandmother. Dan Baker is the brother of Baker President Dwight Baker.

Tyndale signs NFL MVP's mother Print Email

altIn the latest of its football-themed titles, Tyndale House Publishers has signed Loreane Tomlinson--mother of NFL star and San Diego Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson, also known as "LT"--to a book deal.

Her memoir, LT & Me: What Raising an MVP Taught Me about Life, Faith, and Listening to Your Dreams, will be released July 7. In the book, Loreane tells the story of raising LT as a struggling single mother and watching him overcome obstacles in his quest for greatness. LT was the NFL's Most Valuable Player and Man of the Year in 2006.
