The third annual Christian Small Publisher Book of the Year Awards were announced yesterday.

Sponsored by Christian Small Publishers Association (CSPA), the awards--which recognize books produced by small publishers for outstanding contributions in Christian life--featured eight categories: Fiction; Biography; Christian Living; Relationships/Family; Bible Study/Theology; Children's (4-8 years); Children's (8-12 years); and Young Adult (12 years and up).

As the Christian music world prepares for its big night of the year, aspiring and new artists are getting together to learn how to succeed in a rapidly changing industry.

With no retail-focused events and workshops this year, the Gospel Music Association's (GMA) traditional GMA Music Week has been renamed GMA Dove Week, centering on the April 21 awards ceremony. The schedule includes more than a dozen Nashville meetings, artist showcases and conferences.

Retail sales, consumer confidence up Print Email

The U.S. Commerce Department said yesterday that total retail sales in March jumped 1.6%, the largest increase since November as consumers stepped up purchases of vehicles and a wide range of goods, Reuters reported.

Meanwhile, Americans' confidence in the economy rebounded in March after a February plunge, but shoppers remain cautious, according to a private research group's monthly survey, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

'Perfect Game' to premiere in theaters Print Email

The Perfect Game--an inspirational sports drama co-produced by the producer of Thomas Nelson's "Hermie & Friends" video series--will open nationwide in about 500 theaters tomorrow, April 16.

Based on a true story, the movie--rated PG for thematic material, including issues of sexism and racism--tells the story of a ragtag, shoeless group of children from Mexico who shocked the world in 1957 by winning 13 baseball games in a row and the Little League World Series in the only perfect game ever pitched in the championship.

Zondervan makes layoffs in ‘consolidation’ Print Email

Zondervan laid off 30 employees earlier this week as part of "consolidation of some publishing units." The Grand Rapids, Mich., publisher--which still has 374 employees--said it was streamlining operations, but was also hiring people for its digital and multimedia operations, The Grand Rapids Press reported.

Moody Publishers hires women's acquisition editor Print Email

Moody Publishers (MP) has announced the hiring of Deborah Keiser as its new women's acquisition editor.

Keiser has extensivef publishing, marketing and leadership experience. She spent nearly 10 years at InterVarsity Press, ran a marketing and consulting company, and managed a retail sales team.

"We are delighted to have Deborah with us," said Paul Santhouse, MP's director of acquisitions. "She comes to us highly regarded and recommended, and her strong affinity for the reader is sure to bring about that fresh encounter with Jesus Christ we aim for in each of our titles."
