Helping teenage girls recognize and overcome Satan’s lies is the theme of a new book that releases next month from Editorial Portavoz, Kregel’s Spanish imprint.

Mentiras que las jóvenes creen y la verdad que las hace libres (Lies Young Women Believe and the Truth That Sets Them Free, 978-0-825-41202-5, $10.99) by Nancy Leigh DeMoss and Dannah Gresh will release Dec. 31, having debuted in English from Moody Publishers in February 2008.

“We selected this book to publish because we intentionally want to provide solid Christian material to a market that has been generally overlooked in Spanish Christian publishing—the youth market,” explained Cathy Vila, sales and marketing director at Portavoz. “This book was written with teenagers in mind and is just what is needed to help young women without talking down to them.

“The lies that the authors talk about are universal—they cross the culture barrier—Satan’s lies affect everyone, everywhere,” she added. “The authors both believe that the vast majority of Christian young women are suffering the consequences of believing the lies they see all over television, in movies and on the Internet.”

As part of their research, the authors conducted a survey in 10 cities. They considered the responses of more than 1,000 young women, Vila said.

“They uncovered 25 of the most commonly believed lies. ... The consequences of believing these lies can be broken relationships, fear, depression and guilt—and that’s just the beginning,” she said.
Vila added that the authors are “well-equipped to lead young women in the skills and the truths of Scripture that overcome those lies.”

The growing trend of presenting the gospel as a form of self-help is squeezing out the true message of Jesus, writes Michael Horton in Christless Christianity: The Alternative Gospel of the American Church (978-0-801-01318-8, Baker Books/Baker Publishing Group), which releases this month.

Horton, professor of systematic theology and apologetics at Westminster Seminary California and editor of Modern Reformation magazine, believes that too much outside influence, such as consumerism, has changed the message of the church.

New inspirational home and garden products feature 'sought-after' art

Gift vendor Enesco signed a licensing agreement with artist Michael Macone for The Potter’s Shed, his line of contemporary ceramic home and garden accessories. Having released previously from Macone’s own company, the line has been popular with Christian retailers because of the inspirational sayings on many of the designs.

Enesco, whose agreement covers marketing and distribution for The Potter’s Shed, expects to re-launch the existing products in January 2009 with new inspirational designs from Macone tentatively scheduled for mid-2009.

"We are thrilled to partner with Enesco," Macone said. "The company’s global leadership grants us a great opportunity to grow and share our designs worldwide, something we could never do with our own resources."

After being away from the Christian products industry for 13 years, an artist and her husband have returned with new lines of greeting cards, and framed and unframed prints.

Artist Debbie Bell Jarratt and her husband, Thomas, of Durham, N.C., launched Seeds Evangelical Greeting Cards, a religious all-occasion greeting card business, in 1986. Beginning in 1997, the company suffered financial setbacks as Jarratt’s health declined to the point she had to endure loss of sight in one eye and multiple joint replacements. But in 2000, the Jarratts were able to revive their company and launched new categories, including a line of figurines.
