Baker Academic, a division of Baker Publishing Group, aims to reach a new market with its forthcoming "Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture" (CCSS) library.

The series launches in November with two titles, The Gospel of Mark from general editor Mary Healy and First and Second Timothy, Titus from George T. Montague.

"We took on the series because we felt our expertise in developing biblical studies resources could serve this project and its authors and readers well," said Baker Academic Editorial Director Jim Kinney.

With all new material, CCSS will examine the entire New Testament in 17 softcover volumes, and its publication will span six years. The goal of the series is to offer something more than brief study guides but less daunting than academic works.

"The CCSS series provides mid-level commentary," Kinney said. "Though the Protestant world has several mid-level series, Catholic readers currently have none. This series fills that void. It falls between Catholic commentaries that are aimed at a more scholarly reader ("Sacra Pagina" and "Berit Olam") and those aimed at a more basic level ("Collegeville Bible Commentary" and "Ignatius Catholic Study Bible")."
