LifeWay Christian Resources will terminate about 100 employees by Sept. 30 because revenues are lower than expected, Associated Baptist Press (ABP) reported.

In addition to cutting about 5% of its nationwide workforce, the Nashville-based publishing arm of the Southern Baptist Convention is trimming expenses in other areas of operations, according to LifeWay's President and CEO Thom Rainer.

"We're experiencing what every other Christian publisher, retailer and conference center operator is facing," Rob Phillips, a LifeWay spokesman, told The (Nashville) Tennessean. "That's just the reality of lower discretionary spending by our customers."

Most of the job cuts are in the Nashville area, where the bulk of LifeWay's 2,000 employees work at its headquarters and at a distribution center in Lebanon, Tenn., Phillips added.

Phillips told ABP that the 100 jobs are "across the spectrum," including administrative, professional and support positions. Rainer said those whose positions have been deleted would get severance pay, some benefits and outplacement services. LifeWay also operates 145 Christian stores nationwide, which are not impacted by the layoffs.
