C.S. Lewis' classic The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (HarperCollins) is one of the most popular children's books in the country, according to a new study. The first title in Lewis' seven-part fantasy series was the 14th most-read book among sixth-graders in a nationwide survey conducted for Renaissance Learning, which produces computer-based assessment technology for schools. What Kids Are Reading: The Book-Reading Habits of Students in American Schools found that 3 million students from grades one through 12 between them read almost 80 million books last year. For sixth-grade students, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe proved more popular in schools in the South, where it placed eighth overall, than in the West (10th), and Midwest and Northeast (both 12th).
Though J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" books were featured on many lists, none of her titles took the No. 1 slot.
