Sales for Cyber Monday, which launched the online holiday shopping season, were up 21% from last year, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

ComScore Inc., which expected sales to exceed $700 million, reported that consumers spent $733 million online Monday. The record Cyber Monday results followed a Thanksgiving weekend that saw a 4.8% increase from last year with more than 147 million people shopping, according to the National Retail Federation's (NRF) 2007 Black Friday Weekend Survey, conducted by BIGresearch.

Online shoppers gravitated toward consumer electronics merchants to purchase smaller items and spent on average $347.44 per person, NRF said. ComScore reported that the number of online buyers during Cyber Monday rose 38% from a year ago, but the average of dollars spent per buyer was down 12%, the AP reported.
