Religious book sales down in October |

Books sales saw an upward swing in October for most categories tracked by the Association of American Publishers (AAP), but in the Religious Books category revenues were down. While net book sales overall were up 13.8% for the month and down 0.3% year-to-date, Religious Books saw a 4.1% drop for October-a decrease of $72.3 million-and a 9.5% drop for the year. Audiobook sales in October saw a large increase, rising 47.1% for the month with sales totaling $23.9 million; however, sales for the year were down 15.4%. Sales in the Professional and Scholarly category posted an increase of 4.9% for the month ($45.5 million); sales were up by 2% for the year. Higher Education publishing sales decreased 15.9% for October, with negative sales of $11.8 million due to returns; however, sales were up by 3.1% for the year.
The Adult Hardcover category was up 29.4% in October with sales of $295.1 million; sales were also up by 1% for the year. Adult Paperback sales were up 5.2% for the month ($120.5 million), with an increase of 13.8% for the year. Adult Mass Market books also saw increases, rising 25% for October with sales totaling $76.4 million; sales were up 7.5% for the year. The Children's/YA Hardcover category posted an increase of 4% in October with sales of $83 million; however, sales were down 32.5% year-to-date. The Children's/YA Paperback category saw a decline of 9.5% for the month with sales totaling $52.3 million; sales were up 1% for the year.
