George Younce, the legendary bass voice of the Southern gospel group the Cathedrals, died April 11 at age 75, after a long battle with heart problems. According to Singing News, a Southern gospel publication, the quartet, which retired in 1999, was one of the most awarded groups in its genre. The group was formed in the '60s. Younce continued a solo career and most recently performed with the Old Friends Quartet. This year, he received the Singing News' Favorite Male Vocalist of the Year Fan Award. In 1998, he was inducted into the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
Younce is survived by his wife of 49 years, Clara; four daughters; one son; and three grandchildren. A funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday at Akron Baptist Temple in Akron, Ohio.
