altGRAMMY Award-winning gospel artist Benjamin "BeBe" Winans has been charged with misdemeanor domestic assault after a dispute with his ex-wife in Nashville, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

A judge on BET's TV show Sunday Best, Winans, 46, allegedly got into an argument with his ex-wife, Debra, about custody issues over their children at her home Feb. 13, court documents state. Winans' ex-wife told authorities that he pushed her to the ground.

He was released from jail March 12 after posting $1,000 bond, the AP reported. Debra and BeBe Winans have a 13-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son. They were divorced in 2003.

"Since I choose to say nothing negative about my children's mother, I will make no comment other than to say the allegations are inconsistent with my character and the foundation upon which I was raised," Winans said in a statement on his Web site. "I am prayerful that the matter is straightened out very soon for the sake of our children."
