Best known for her role in the TV series Northern Exposure, actress Janine Turner said "God directed" her to write about the single mothers in her first book.

Holding Her Head High: 12 Single Mothers Who Championed Their Children and Changed History is to be released by Thomas Nelson Publishers in March.

"Mainly, the goal of the book is to inspire single mothers and let them know they're not alone," said Turner, who is a single mother. "I believe God directed me to all these women in the book. They were all Christians, they all had faith and were all single mothers, wonderful mothers and amazing women. They went through horrible, terrible crises in their lives, but they didn't despair."

Turner can relate to the subject of her book, she said. "My faith has deepened even more so because (my daughter's) father has not been in our lives," she said. "I feel a real friendship and closeness with God. My daughter has a close friendship with God. I read the Bible in a year and go to Bible studies and reach out to church. God has been my daughter's father and my husband. My faith has definitely been my cornerstone."
