Fireproof , the latest Christian drama from the church-based moviemakers who scored a surprise hit two years ago with Facing the Giants, will hit 860 screens nationwide tomorrow. The film—which has been previewed at Christian retail industry events for months—stars Kirk Cameron as a firefighter struggling to save his dying marriage. Thanks to grass-roots support and bulk purchases from churchgoers, the movie "could make an impact at the box office this weekend and beyond," the Los Angeles Times observed. Rated PG because for the intensity of some of the firefighting scenes, Fireproof has been No. 1 in advance sales on movie ticketing site Fandango.com with 31% of this week's business. Along with churchgoers, some Christian bookstores have purchased tickets to distribute for Fireproof showings. Rodney Redmond, owner of the Sanctuary Christian bookstore in Columbus, Ga., bought 500 tickets for two showings—one for Saturday and one on Sunday, the (Columbus) Ledger-Enquirer reported. He told the newspaper that The Love Dare (B&H Publishing Group), a marriage book written by the film's co-producing brothers Stephen and Alex Kendrick who directed Facing the Giants, "is already the No. 2 best-seller year-to-date." B&H officials said the book has sold 300,000 copies and is in its third printing. Elsewhere, Ron Forster—owner of Open Door Christian Bookstore in Terre Haute, Ind.—rented out a local theater to give firefighters, police officers and their spouses a free screening on Saturday of Fireproof, WTHI-TV reported. Meanwhile, Alex Kendrick was scheduled to appear today on Dr. Phil to discuss the film and The Love Dare. Cameron was featured on the Today show, Fox & Friends and Fox News Network's The Morning Show With Mike & Juliet as well as the "Focus on the Family" radio program earlier this week.
Additionally, Cameron and Alex and Stephen Kendrick were scheduled to be featured today and tomorrow on the "HomeWord With Jim Burns" radio program. The Kendrick brothers were also scheduled to appear today and tomorrow on the "FamilyLife Today" radio program as part of a three-day series on faith-based movies.
