International retail training expert Jack Scott has produced a photo guide to some of the challenges and opportunities faced by Christian retailers around the world. Drawing from visits to Christian retail stores in a dozen countries, Scott's “global picture” is presented in the July 7 issue of Christian Retailing International magazine. Among the issues spotlighted in his visual report are how Christian Literature Crusade Bookstore in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, handled security concerns in the light of break-ins and armed robberies, and the Bus 4 Life project in Slovakia that takes Christian resources to small towns and villages where there are no bookstores. With more than 30 years in Christian publishing and retailing, Scott has provided international training for many groups, including Christian Trade Association International, CBA, the U.S. State Department, the American Booksellers Association and Religious Booksellers Trade Exhibit. "Running a Christian bookstore is hard work everywhere," he said. "Long hours, demanding customers, shrinking margins, increasing competition and a shortage of cash and credit are not peculiar to Christian retailers in the U.S." Yet, "you cannot help but feel encouraged when visiting Christian businesses," he said. "They welcome you with joyful greetings, refreshments and insightful questions about how they can improve their businesses and ministries."
