Chris Childers, the independent retailer chairman of CBA, has sold his landmark family-run business to Berean Christian Stores.

Macon Christian Bookstore in Macon, Ga., which opened in 1949, became the 23rd Berean store in seven states in this week's deal, details of which were not disclosed.

Childers said that a number of factors had figured in the decision to sell, including a son's long-term health problems. He was exploring other career opportunities, he said, and would serve out the remainder of his chairmanship, which runs through the end of September. He would continue to be involved with the store during a transition period, he added.

Berean had a strong history of serving local communities, Childers said, and the family was “very excited to know that the ministry to which we have devoted our lives will continue to be a beacon in the Macon and Middle Georgia area.”

Childers' parents, Knox and Janelle Childers, bought the store in 1982. He joined the business full-time in 1984 and later became manager. He was appointed CBA chairman three years ago.

Berean President Les Dietzman said that the Cincinnati-based chain was pleased to be able to add the Macon store to its roster. The Childers “have a long history of serving churches and individual customers … and we look forward to building on their heritage.”

In a statement, CBA President Bill Anderson paid tribute to Childers' “leadership in the industry, his willingness to finish his term as chairman and especially for his personal example.”
