Former CBA Board Chairman Ernie Martin, 70, died Feb. 28 in New Hampshire after being hospitalized for several weeks with health complications, according to the booksellers' trade association.

Martin owned Whittemore's in Needham Heights, Mass., which closed when his health issues began to worsen. He served on the CBA board from 1992 to 2002 and as chairman from 2000 to 2002.

As chairman, Martin helped the CBA board adopt the Carver Model of policy governance, CBA officials said. He mentored Chair-Elect Glenn McGinnis for his term as board chairman.

“Ernie was a selfless servant to many,” CBA President Bill Anderson said. “I was always amazed at his positive attitude despite his battles with cancer, heart and other health issues that complicated his latter years. Heaven is richer, and Ernie, now pain-free, is with the Savior he served and loved.”

Martin's memorial service is set for March 11 at Rumney Baptist Church in Rumney, N.H. Martin is survived by his wife, Ginny, son, daughter and her husband.
