Author T.D. Jakes won the 2006 Quill Book Award in the Religion/Spirituality category for his Putnam best-seller Mama Made the Difference, overcoming competitors such as The Narnian by Alan Jacobs (HarperSanFrancisco) and The Universe in a Single Atom by Dalai Lama (Morgan Road Books/Broadway Books). Held Tuesday evening at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, the second annual Quill Awards were hosted by NBC News' Lester Holt. Tyler Perry's Don't Make a Black Woman Take Off Her Earrings (Riverhead) was voted Book of the Year and also won in the Humor category. The Preacher's Daughter by Beverly Lewis (Bethany House) had been nominated in the Romance category, which was taken by Nora Roberts and her Putnam book Blue Smoke.
Created by Reed Business Information and the NBC Universal Television Stations, The Quill Awards afford readers the opportunity to vote online for their favorite books. Nominees in 20 categories, including Book of the Year, were selected by booksellers and librarians. Each book nominated must meet one of several possible criteria, such as being classified as a Borders best-seller or having a starred review in Publishers Weekly |
