In the wake of last week's school shootings in the heavily Amish Lancaster County, Pa., several Christian market authors of Amish-themed fiction have expressed sorrow at the tragedy. Award-winning author Beverly Lewis, who recently wrote the “Annie's People” series (Bethany House Publishers)-including Quill Book Award finalist The Preacher's Daughter-left a message at her Web site. “My family and I are deeply saddened by the recent tragedy in my beloved homeland,” wrote Lewis, who was born in Lancaster. “I am, however, heartened by the knowledge that the strong faith of the Amish people (particularly those families touched by this loss) will remain firmly rooted in their unwavering belief in God's sovereignty. That they are already demonstrating mercy and forgiveness, qualities I have long admired among my dear Amish friends, is beautiful evidence of God's grace and goodness,” she added. Wanda Brunstetter, Barbour Publishing author of the “Daughters of Lancaster County” series-including The Storekeeper's Daughter-sent out a similar message through her publisher.
“My heart goes out to all the Amish who have lost children or have been affected by this in some way,” she said, advising those wanting to help to pray and keep watch for the Amish people's safety in daily life. “I feel as if I, too, have lost loved ones,” she said.
