Tomlin wins five Dove Awards Print Email

The 37th annual GMA Music Awards—also known as the Dove Awards—were awarded last night at the end of GMA Week in Nashville. The big winner at this year's GMA Awards was Chris Tomlin, who took home Doves for Male Vocalist of the Year and Artist of the Year, and both Song of the Year and Worship Song of the Year, both of which were awarded for “How Great Is Our God,” with Jesse Reeves and Ed Cash. Tomlin also was one of various featured artists awarded for the Special Event Album of the Year, Music Inspired by the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe (Sparrow).

Natalie Grant was named Female Vocalist of the Year, while Casting Crowns received Group of the Year. INO band The Afters was awarded New Artist of the Year.

Some mainstream and crossover artists also received Dove Awards. American Idol winner Carrie Underwood took home the award for Country Recorded Song of the Year for “Jesus, Take the Wheel” (Some Hearts, Arista/Arista Nashville/19 Recordings). Word Records country artist Randy Travis won Country Album of the Year for Glory Train. Former Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell received the Inspirational Recorded Song of the Year for “In Christ Alone” (WOW #1's, Reunion). Relient K won an award for Rock Album of the Year for Mmhmm (Gotee/Capitol).

Also awarded for Music Inspired by the Chronicles of Narnia was Steven Curtis Chapman, which marked the 50th Dove Award of his career and the most Dove Awards ever won by any artist. Chapman was given a standing ovation after a musical tribute featuring some of his past hits performed by Jeremy Camp, David Crowder, Casting Crowns' Mark Hall and Third Day's Mac Powell.

Other winners included: Songwriter of the Year, Christa Wells; Rock/Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year, “Here Is Our King” (A Collision, David Crowder Band, Sixstepsrecords/Sparrow); Pop/Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year, “Cry Out to Jesus” (Wherever You Are, Third Day, Essential); Southern Gospel Recorded Song of the Year, (tie) “Long As I Got King Jesus” (Live in NYC, Brian Free & Assurance, Daywind) and “Through the Fire” (Live at Brooklyn Tabernacle, The Crabb Family/Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, Daywind); Bluegrass Recorded Song of the Year, “Living Prayer” (Lonely Runs Both Ways, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Rounder Records); Urban Recorded Song of the Year, “Looking for You” (Hero, Kirk Franklin, Fo Yo Soul/Zomba); Traditional Gospel Recorded Song of the Year, “God Blocked It” (One Church Project, Kurt Carr, Gospo Centric/Zomba); Contemporary Gospel Recorded Song of the Year, “Not Forgotten” (Alive in South Africa, Israel & New Breed, Integrity Gospel); Rap/Hip-Hop Album of the Year, Behind the Musik, KJ-52 (BEC Recordings/Uprok); Rock/Contemporary Album of the Year, A Collision, David Crowder Band (Sixstepsrecords/Sparrow); Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year, Lifesong, Casting Crowns (Beach Street/Reunion); Inspirational Album of the Year, (tie) Hymned, Bart Millard (Simple Records/INO) and Rock of Ages … Hymns & Faith, Amy Grant (Word Records); Southern Gospel Album of the Year, Live at Brooklyn Tabernacle, The Crabb Family (Daywind); Urban Album of the Year, Hero, Kirk Franklin (Fo Yo Soul/Zomba); Traditional Gospel Album of the Year, Atom Bomb, Blind Boys of Alabama (Narada/EMI Gospel); Contemporary Gospel Album of the Year, Mary Mary, Mary Mary (Sony Urban/Columbia/My Block); Praise & Worship Album of the Year Blessed Be Your Name: The Songs of Matt Redman Vol. 1, Matt Redman (Sparrow/Sixstepsrecords).
