GoatMilkStuff-FloralGiftPackFamily-owned and -operated Goat Milk Stuff is bringing its goat milk products to the Christian market. Based in Scottsburg, Ind., the company is known for using the milk from the family’s goat herd to make soap, lip balm, lotions, bath fizzies and more.

Founder PJ Jonas and her husband, Jim Jonas, are parents to eight children, ages 6 to 16. The children are homeschooled, and each has his or her own age-appropriate role in the company, from milking goats to helping in the office. Considering their farming lifestyle, their company motto seems appropriate: “Work Hard. Get Dirty. Use Good Soap.”

PJ started making natural soap for her children so that they would not have to be exposed to the chemicals of most commercial brand soaps. Having started in her kitchen on their three-acre farm five years ago, the business now runs from the family’s new 36-acre farm, now with a soap-making building, barn, more goats and some full-time employees.

PJ said that Christian retail is a new direction for Goat Milk Stuff, as the company has primarily focused on Internet sales via its website, www.GoatMilkStuff.com. However, with the recent completion of a new 7,000 square-foot soap room, she said the company now has “the space and infrastructure to increase the wholesale and retail side of our business.”

The company is considering adding scripture to its products, making them potentially more marketable at Christian retail.

“We look forward to adding scripture,” PJ said. “Our soaps are packaged in cotton drawstring bags which are not always easy to tie things to. We often add individual cards inside the bags that have personalized messages, and it would be easy to insert a card with scripture or custom branding on it.”

Christian retailers may be interested in carrying Goat Milk Stuff’s Oatmeal, Milk & Honey goat milk soap, which is “by far our most popular soap and is great for both men and women of all ages,” PJ said. “Pairing the bar soaps with lip balm is always a popular combination that sells well year-round.”

TV’s The Doctors featured the company last year (www.tinyurl.com/bo68s2u) , and PJ won the 2013 Leading Moms In Business competition this year (http://tinyurl.com/otwq6wb).

On a personal note, PJ also said she enjoys taking her kids to shop at Christian retail stores.

“I love being able to take my kids into a Christian retail store and not worry that they will come across material that I find objectionable,” she said. “I think that other moms would enjoy finding a natural goat milk soap that is made by a Christian family.”
