Shrugging off the impact of a continuing dismal economy, David C. Cook announced today that book sales increased by more than 65% last year.

The Colorado Springs, Colo.-based nonprofit "achieved breakout success" with Francis Chan's Crazy Love, which has sold more than 750,000 copies, but the book was "not the only reason that Cook has to celebrate," company officials said.

"Thanks in part to the gains of the past year, we are poised for further growth in 2010," said Cook President and CEO Cris Doornbos. "We are constantly considering those voices that God has gifted to expand our diverse lineup of authors and product lines. This includes well-known authors like Brennan Manning and Joni Eareckson Tada, and relatively unknown authors who--like Francis Chan--may be the sources of tomorrow's church-shaping content."

Additionally, Cook has gone from fourth place to become the leading Christian product distributor in Canada, in part because Ontario-based R.G. Mitchell Family Books closed in September 2008--causing some U.S. publishers to scramble to find other sources of distribution there. "Even in a tough economy, quality content will find an audience," said Cook Senior Vice President Editorial and Publisher Dan Rich.

Cook has also chosen to publish fewer books in fewer categories, instead focusing on five key audiences to allow for greater depth and quality of the titles, company officials said.

Through Kingsway Music, Cook's subsidiary in the United Kingdom, the company publishes 30% of the most popular praise & worship music, including artists such as Matt Redman, Tim Hughes and Brenton Brown.
