InterVarsity Press (IVP) books topped Leadership Journal's top 10 books for church leaders from 2009, recently announced by the magazine.

Selected by a group of more than 100 pastors and leaders, including contributing editors of the magazine, the winners of the Golden Canon Leadership Book Awards were divided into two different sections--the Leader's Inner Life, which focuses on communion with God, and the Leader's Outer Life, which points to church leadership's best practices.

Three IVP books were chosen for the Leader's Outer Life list: Deep Church: A Third Way Beyond Emerging and Traditional by Jim Belcher, honored as the "Best of the Best" in the category; Love Is an Orientation: Elevating the Conversation With the Gay Community by Andrew Marin (Likewise); and The Next Evangelicalism: Freeing the Church From Western Cultural Captivity by Soong-Chan Rah. Longing for God: Seven Paths of Christian Devotion by Richard Foster and Gayle Bebee, a Formation book from IVP, was selected in the Leader's Outer Life section.

The rest of the Leader's Outer Life winners were Lost and Found: The Younger Unchurched and the Churches That Reach Them by Ed Stetzer (B&H Books/B&H Publishing Group) and The Monkey and the Fish: Liquid Leadership for a Third-Culture Church by Dave Gibbons (Zondervan).

The Leader's Outer Life "Best of the Best" winner was Knowing Christ Today: Why We Can Trust Spiritual Knowledge by Dallas Willard (HarperOne)." Other winners in the Outer Life category were: Leading on Empty: Refilling Your Tank and Renewing Your Passion by Wayne Cordeiro (Bethany House Publishers/Baker Publishing Group); A Praying Life: Connecting With God in a Distracting World by Paul E. Miller (NavPress); and Why We Love the Church: In Praise of Institutions and Organized Religion by Kevin DeYoung and Ted Kluck (Moody Publishers).
