In a promotion that plays off the government's much-publicized "Cash for Clunkers" effort to boost auto sales, Bridge-Logos Foundation is offering independent Christian stores a "Cash for Clunker Books" incentive.

Retailers who buy 12 books will receive a 50% discount, free freight and $10 credit for a "clunker book" in their store--no matter who published it, company officials said.

Bridge-Logos Executive Vice President of Marketing Steve Becker told Christian Retailing that he came up with the idea "to help the stores during these hard times and also help others by retailers donating the title of their choice to someone in need of a book."

"This gets the dust collectors off the shelves, and at the same time the stores are not losing money for that product, while creating positive relationships with others, like a ‘pay it forward' incentive," he said. "Unlike the car industry that now has all these cars sitting without any use, in this program the books are being used. We have asked the stores to give the book away regardless if it is a Bridge-Logos (title) or not. They do not have to return it to us."

Becker added that the program runs through September. "We have had very positive feedback," he said. "Many (retailers) seem to be amused by the program and are taking advantage of this opportunity."

Earlier this year, Bridge-Logos offered Christian stores a consignment program that played off the government's stimulus package effort. The Alachua, Fla.-based company gave retailers an opportunity to stock Bridge-Logos books in their stores for free with no obligation until they sold them.
