‘Christianity Today’ announces books of the year Print Email

For the second year in a row, InterVarsity Press (IVP) books topped the Christianity Today Book Awards, announced this week by the magazine.

Seventy-two publishers nominated 472 titles published last year for the publication's annual list of best books. Christianity Today editors selected the top books in each category, with panels of judges then choosing 12 winners--including two ties--and also making 11 awards of merit.

Munce’s CPE Hershey 'exceeded expectations' Print Email

An upbeat group of more than 250 retailers and 70 suppliers took part this week in the Munce Group's Christian Product Expo (CPE) Hershey. CPE Hershey--held Jan. 17-19 at the Hershey Lodge in Hershey, Pa.--saw a 25% increase in attendance from last year's event, which drew 261 retailers representing 213 stores, according to organizers.

"We thank the Lord for a great event where effective ministry and profitable business was experienced by all attendees-retailers and exhibitors alike," said Munce Group President Bob Munce.

‘Relatable’ teen movie to premiere Print Email

Generating positive feedback from some secular media outlets, To Save a Life, a faith-based teen-oriented movie, will hit approximately 1,000 theaters screens nationwide tomorrow. The film--which was previewed at the International Christian Retail Show (ICRS) in July--was produced by evangelism and church resource organization Outreach and is being distributed by Samuel Goldwyn Films, which also distributed the surprise hit Fireproof nearly two years ago.

Thanks to grass-roots support from Christians--similar to that Fireproof received in order for it to be shown in more theaters--To Save a Life could make an impact at the box office this weekend.

Religious book sales level out Print Email

The months-long slide in sales of religious books halted in November, while overall book sales increased by 10.9% to $808.5 million and were up by 4.9% for the year, according to the Association of American Publishers (AAP).

The month's sales for religious books were $48.7 million--with no change over October--although the category was down by 9.7% for the year. Previously, sales of religious books had been on a steady decline--decreasing 8.5%, 12.3%, 13.8%, 9.3%, 22%, 12%, 7.1%, 11.4%, 19% and 9% in October, September, August, July, June, May, April, March, February and January, respectively.

Workshops, worship, cash rewards at The Gathering Print Email

Internet sales, in-store marketing and staff recruitment and training are among the educational offerings in April at The Gathering 2010, Christian Retailing's annual event for store owners, managers and workers.

More than 20 workshops are to be presented during the three-day program at Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, Ky., April 21-23.

Bridge-Logos highlighted in virtual show Print Email

Bridge-Logos Foundation books are featured in Christian Retailing's Virtual Christian Restock Connection, an online exhibition that will feature Webinars and interviews with retailers and suppliers offering advice on inventory issues.

Running through March 30, the show is hosted by Christian Retailing magazine, highlighting some of the key new and backlist products from leading suppliers.

Dr. Colbert's latest on 'New York Times' list Print Email

Dr. Colbert's "I Can Do This" Diet by Dr. Don Colbert (Siloam) will be ranked No. 12 on the New York Times Hardcover Advice best-seller list for the week of Jan. 24.

The weight-loss book was released earlier this month. Best known for the "Bible Cure" series--which has sold more than 3 million copies--Colbert has written several best-sellers, including Toxic Relief, Living in Divine Health, Eat This and Live! and the New York Times best-selling book The Seven Pillars of Health (all Siloam/Strang Book Group).

 
Gospel singer Calvin Hunt dies Print Email

Gospel singer Calvin Hunt died Dec. 26 from lung cancer in a Queens, N.Y., hospital. A member and soloist of the Christ Tabernacle Choir and the Brooklyn Tabernacle Singers, Hunt was 52.

Hunt's 2008 release, Bridges (Vine Records), received two Dove Award nominations last year. Christ Tabernacle Choir Director Steven Carey said Hunt's "ministry transcended his terrific musical talent."
