Kevin Sumner, founder and CEO of California-based 1 Eighty Apparel has joined forces with Washington Redskins starting offensive tackle Tyler Polumbus to create a new company and Christian active wear line called CLAIMED. The two connected via social media, and Polumbus called Sumner to discuss his idea for a T-shirt line. Instead, the two took a different direction. Sumner was already researching the $1.5 billion fitness industry and praying about how to implement an active wear line. As a result, there was “instant synergy,” Sumner said, and the CLAIMED partnership was formed. “We totally felt God in the midst of everything,” Sumner said about their conversations leading to the development of the brand. Polumbus’ goal was to bring a line of clothing to the marketplace that would reflect his athletic lifestyle and bring glory to Christ. "I want my work to reflect a person that is CLAIMED by the allegiance of the One that gave me the ability to block the amazing athletes in the NFL,” Polumbus said. “He has the CLAIM to the work he is doing through me on the field.” Sumner wants “to give believers the ability to share their faith in gym or the playing field,” he said. The CLAIMED concept is based on Rom. 6:17 (NIV): “But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance.” Apparel from 1 Eighty has been popular with Christian music artists and has been worn by some pro athletes. Now, Sumner is making inroads into professional sports with 11 players, including Polumbus and David Akers of the Detroit Lions, wearing the active wear. Available to ship Nov. 1, the active wear line is launching with Dri-FIT, moisture-wicking, short-sleeve shirts and hats in fashion colors. Each retails for $27.95. With almost 2 million people working out on a regular basis and with interest from Christian athletes in organizations such as Athletes in Action and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Sumner sees a bright future for the brand. “There definitely is a lot of interest because it’s a perfect fit,” he said of the Christian athlete groups. Future products now in the design phase include shorts, yoga apparel, beanies and wristbands. Click here to learn more about CLAIMED on Facebook. Order from Kevin Sumner at 949-525-1665. |
