Ready, Steady, Grow! by Sophie Piper; illustrated by Georgie Birkett

This book on first experiences for the very young is about growing up strong and well, promoting the values of healthy eating, exercise and hygiene. Pictures and simple text show toddlers in a range of situations that help them grow up well—eating lots of vegetables, running, jumping, skipping and cycling—and remembering to brush and brush and brush one’s teeth. The book ends with a height chart with more advice, so toddlers can see how they measure up.

Belief: Readings on the Reason for Faith by Francis S. Collins, ed.

The debate on the existence of God has been dominated recently by atheists such as Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins who argue that faith in God is irrational. But, Collins asserts in Belief, faith and reason are not mutually exclusive and never have been. The renowned physician and geneticist and New York Times best-selling author of The Language of God has compiled a provocative collection of essays that reinforce the intellectual tradition on the side of faith. The essays feature the work of many of the world’s greatest thinkers—philosophers, preachers, poets, and scientists—such as C.S. Lewis, Martin Luther King Jr., Madeleine L’Engle, Elie Wiesel, Desmond Tutu, Mother Teresa and Mahatma Gandhi.
