An at-a-glance guide to the big Bible events and releases of 2011

The oldest, the biggest and the newest feature in a busy year in the Bible market.

Publishers anticipate heightened interest in the Scriptures as the King James Version marks it 400th anniversary, while there is also much anticipation of the forthcoming update of the best-selling contemporary translation, the New International Version (NIV).

Meanwhile, some are hoping that there is room for yet another presentation of God’s Word, with launches for the Common English Bible (CEB) and The Voice translations and new editions and repackaging of some of the most popular previous printings.

Retailers are looking ahead expectantly. Bibles have been “a strong emphasis” at Berean Christian Stores in the past year and will continue to be so in 2011, said Director of Operations David Jordan. “We are planning multiple Bible sale events throughout the year that touch on all translations.”

The new NIV will be “a strong added component to our emphasis,” while the CEB will also be given “special attention” in upcoming catalogs. “Creating specific events around our Bible department is a high priority for the coming year and beyond,” Jordan said.

Mardel Christian & Education is also looking forward to the new NIV, said Senior Buyer Dylan Hillhouse, while the first quarter will also see the chain emphasizing the God Sightings Bible reading campaign from Tyndale House Publishers and Group Publishing, and the Beautiful Everyday Bible program recruiting stores to help provide copies of the Bible for crisis pregnancy centers.

The pro-life effort is to get backing from Parable stores, too. They will be “heavily promoting” Bibles during Easter—“always a great selling season”—and planning “strong campaigns” for the NIV and CEB, said Melanie Strouss, the group’s marketing and merchandising strategist.

“As far as our in-store promotions go, we coordinate our in-store merchandising plans with our catalogs and e-mails, so we will be featuring each of these Bibles and promotions in our stores—and we are very excited them all.”

Here are some of the main events and releases for the coming year:
