This week most of us will be with family and friends celebrating a wonderful American holiday. It is not one directed by Scripture, but one that is supported by more than 100 Scripture passages-it is all about being thankful.

I want to tell you some things and people I am most thankful for in the ninth year of this new millennium. With apologies to David Letterman, I will use his "Top Ten" format to share with you the folks and situations that have blessed me this year.

National media visited Destiny World Outreach Center in Killeen, Texas, in the aftermath of the Nov. 5 shootings at nearby Fort Hood, which left 13 dead and 42 wounded, to report on how the church-with a large military membership-was reaching out to members of its congregation and local community.

Christians working together peacefully and in unity is not just a dream goal, it is a mandate from God and an essential part of effective ministry.

The outside observer may doubt that those working in a church bookstore would ever experience the tensions, anxieties and misunderstandings that plague the secular workforce. But the truth is, Christians working together in the ministry of the church are not exempt from disharmony.

There never seems to be enough room to display everything adequately, but it can pay to have less on some shelves and make more of what is there. Presenting books face-out makes more of an impact and encourages browsers who might not want to spend the time trying to read a row of spine titles. The Potter's Wheel at T.D. Jakes' The Potter's House in Dallas displays most of its inventory face-out.

Gift supplier Lighthouse Christian Products is giving retailers a glimpse of how some of its products are helping support overseas ministry.

The company's video presentation at its booth at Christian Retailing's Virtual Christmas Showcase includes photos and news of the New Day foster home ministry in China, which benefits from sales of Lighthouse's "Moments of Faith" line.

My store's cash wrap is getting overly cluttered. How can I clean it up?

The cash wrap is the core of your store, so special attention must always be paid to keep it clean and organized.

Clean all the surrounding surfaces. That includes phones, keyboards, the counter and anything within sight of the customer. Avoid keeping unnecessary items on the counter-put away scissors, pens, notepads and anything that can be organized in a place out of view.

CHURCH LIFE: Train up a child ... Print Email

Children who are regularly involved in church activities grow up to have a greater connection to faith than other adults, according to research by the Barna Group.

Grown-ups who attended Sunday school or other religious programs as children or as teens were found to be much more likely than those without such experiences to attend church and to have an active faith.
