Go by the Newsboys (Inpop Records/EMI CMG Distribution) continued atop the SoundScan Christian/Gospel music Christian retail chart for sales the week ending Jan. 25, while Facing the Giants (Provident Films/Provident-Integrity Distribution) remained at No. 1 on the Christian Videos list.

Leading church bookstore to close Print Email

The Garden Bookstore at Houston's First Baptist Church in Houston--a leading member of the church bookstore movement--is to close as part of cost-cutting moves at the church.

The 2,000-square-foot store with a staff of four was founded 16 years ago by manager Geni Hulsey, president of the Church Bookstore Network since it was founded in 2006.

The economic downturn can be seen in the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association's (ECPA) latest best-sellers list, as financial expert Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover (Thomas Nelson) enters the Top 50 book chart at No. 6 this month.

‘Fireproof’ DVD, 'Love Dare' selling well Print Email

The recently released Fireproof DVD is selling well in the Christian retail channel. The top independent movie release of 2008--which stars Kirk Cameron as a firefighter who turns to God to save his marriage--was released on video Jan. 27.

"Fireproof had the highest pre-sell of any Christian DVD ever," Christian Book Distributors President Ray Hendrickson told Christian Retailing. "The Love Dare sales have been excellent."

Fox signs on for next ‘Narnia’ film Print Email

A month after Walt Disney Pictures dropped its plan to co-finance the third movie in "The Chronicles of Narnia" film series, Walden Media has found a new partner in 20th Century Fox, Variety reported.

Fox--which was entitled to first crack at The Voyage of the Dawn Treader after Disney pulled out because of the shared Fox Walden marketing and distribution label--has made a commitment to develop the project. The two sides are still working out budget and script issues, but the plan is to shoot the film at the end of summer for a holiday 2010 release through the Fox Walden label, Variety reported.

R-rated ‘House’ DVD coming to Christian stores Print Email

House, the first R-rated Christian horror movie, is to be released on DVD April 7.

Based on the novel of the same name by Ted Dekker and Frank Peretti, the movie will be distributed to Christian stores by Thomas Nelson carrying a sticker on the cover with an endorsement from the Hollywood Jesus movie review Web site. "Not a curse word or body part," says the review, "just sheer dread that never lets up."

Harvest House Publishers has announced the hiring of general market industry veteran Brad Moses as national general markets sales manager, effective Feb. 2.

With more than 18 years in magazine and book publishing sales, marketing and management, Moses recently managed Moses Ventures-a consulting firm that was also the umbrella organization for Pro League Media, a sports publishing and media company.
