Acclaimed theologian and Moody author Charles Ryrie dies Print Email

CharlesRyrieKnown as general editor of The Ryrie Study Bible, Dr. Charles Caldwell Ryrie died Feb. 16 as he neared his 91st birthday. Ryrie taught systematic theology at Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS), then became the longtime dean of doctoral studies until he retired in 1983.

Born in St. Louis in 1925, he grew up in Alton, Illinois. For a time, he attended Haverford College in Pennsylvania and planned to follow his father's footsteps and become a banker. Instead, he opted to go to DTS after meeting with the school's founder, Lewis Sperry Chafer, and hearing a ministry call from the Lord, according to an obituary posted by DTS.

Carpentree-GND2Carpentree is releasing eight new products with scripture and quotes from the Pure Flix film God’s Not Dead 2. Releasing April 1, the film tells the story of a high school teacher who answers a student's question about Jesus, landing her in a court battle with an atheist group.

The new product line includes wall décor and gifts that keep the message of the film front and center. The line is anchored with two canvases, one with scripture and the other with a thought-provoking tagline from the film. Both styles offer quotes from the movie or scripture that supports the movie’s overall question: Where do you stand?

United Methodist Publishing House elects new president, CEO Print Email

Brian-MilfordThe board of the United Methodist Publishing House (UMPH) has elected Reverend Brian K. Milford as the incoming president and CEO. The decision was made Tuesday during a video conference meeting. 

"I am honored by this opportunity to serve The United Methodist Church and wider community,” Milford said. “I look forward to working with a stellar team of dedicated and talented people as we provide relevant, quality and helpful resources for the Christian journey. We will strive every day to creatively sustain and enhance the ministries of Cokesbury and Abingdon Press.”

fervent-coverPriscilla Shirer’s Fervent (B&H Books) and Pope Francis’ The Name of God is Mercy (Random House) were No. 1 and 2 on Christian Retailing’s most recent Nielsen BookScan best-seller list. Sarah Young’s Jesus Calling (Thomas Nelson), the Kendrick brothers' The Battle Plan for Prayer (B&H Books) and Joel Osteen’s Fresh Start (FaithWords) rounded out the top five.

Following the coloring book trend, Whatever Is Lovely (WaterBrook Press) landed at No. 6 on the list, and other coloring books made the top 100 as well.

Formerly associate publisher and brand manager for the "Action Bible" line, DeVries is now publisher of Tru, Bible-in-Life (children), Echoes, Scripture Press, the "Action Bible Collection" and all children’s books.

DeVries is a children’s author herself, having written over 20 books for children, including the best-selling Adventure Bible Storybook. A graduate of Calvin College, DeVries has garnered considerable critical acclaim, including three Retailer’s Choice Awards (now Christian Retailing's Best) and a Gold Medallion from the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association.

Users can visit shareyourmiracle.com to create a customized digital image of someone who is a miracle to them—whether it is an encouraging family member, a spouse, motivating teacher or best friend. On the site, users can upload a photo, personalize it and share it  on their social channels or the website’s gallery.

CPEHershey-SalesFloor-TessaAfsharIndependent Christian retailers and vendors came to Christian Product Expo (CPE) at the Hershey Lodge in Hershey, Pennsylvania, to be encouraged, equipped and engaged in the Feb. 7-9 tradeshow. 

CPE launched with a full lineup of activities, including a Retail Refresh Bootcamp led by Robbie Halstead of Kingdom Retail Solutions and Bookstore Manager training. Other sessions included VBS training, current product trends and discipleship training from Don Graybill with The Navigators (Tyndale).
