Berean Christian Stores has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, with management at the regional chain expressing confidence that the business will continue under a new owner.

Announcing the June 9 move, Berean President Bill Simmons told Christian Retailing that he expected a purchase would be completed by the end of July, ensuring that the company would be "adequately capitalized well into the future."

Economic downturn spurs interest in secondhand titles

With the economy and consumer discretionary spending continuing to decline, used books departments are on the rise in Christian stores as retailers seek ways to generate sales and increase foot traffic.

They say selling secondhand titles makes sense as customers alter their book-buying habits during the recession.

Two leading Catholic publishers merge Print Email

Two leading Catholic publishers have announced a merger. Our Sunday Visitor has acquired Harcourt Religion Publishers from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

"We are thrilled to welcome Harcourt Religion Publishers into ... (our) family," said Greg Erlandson, president and publisher of Our Sunday Visitor. "They have long stood out for their curricula and forward-looking support tools. The joining of our product lines not only reinforces both missions, but it leverages similar corporate cultures that value innovation, hybrid solutions and sharing what the church teaches and why to Catholics of all ages."

‘Publishing miracle’ of ‘The Shack’ spotlighted Print Email

Christian publishing sensation The Shack has caught the attention of heavyweight money magazine, Forbes, which investigates author William P. Young's "publishing miracle" in its latest issue.

According to the publication, the "surprise success" of the book--more than 7 million copies sold since it was originally published by a start-up company launched by two friends in 2007--ranks it with other all-time self-publishing hits like 1931's The Joy of Cooking, 1970's What Color Is Your Parachute? and 1993's The One Minute Manager.

Dekker, publishers energized by ‘Gathering’ Print Email

Representing what some say could be the future of Christian book shows, a sold-out crowd of 500 Ted Dekker fans packed themselves into a theater in Franklin, Tenn., for the 2009 Gathering at the weekend--an event named after celebrations described in Dekker's "The Circle Trilogy."

Held June 6 at The Factory, the third annual Gathering was sponsored by Dekker's management firm, Creative Trust, with additional backing from the author's two publishers‬--Thomas Nelson and Center Street/Hachette Book Group (HBG) USA.

Howard Books' The Wholehearted Marriage: Fully Engaging Your Most Important Relationship, by Greg Smalley and Shawn Stoever, identifies the traits of marriages that go beyond "good" and become "great." The authors coined the term "wholehearted" to describe a marriage in which "both spouses have two fully open and engaged hearts."

"We are moving at an ever-increasing speed toward who knows what and at a cost of who knows what," Smalley said. "At warp speed, we miss out on chances to wholeheartedly engage our spouse, open our hearts for intimate sharing and have fun without interruptions. We just don't have enough time for each other."
