Film spotlights surfer’s ‘courage, faith in God’ Print Email

Filming has began in Oahu and Kauai, Hawaii on the inspirational life story of teen surfer Bethany Hamilton, a Christian who, at age 13, had her left arm bitten off by a tiger shark in October 2003.

Based on Hamilton's Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board (MTV Books), which was sold in some Christian bookstores, the film, also called Soul Surfer, is scheduled to be released in theaters late this summer, according to People magazine.

Billy Graham film coming to Christian retail Print Email

Billy: The Early Years--about the genesis of Billy Graham's ministry--will be released on DVD March 16 by Phase 4 Films and distributed to Christian retail by BMG Distribution.

Directed by Robby Benson, the film stars Armie Hammer (Veronica Mars, Flicka) as the young evangelist and takes viewers through Graham's early years, as he meets his future wife, Ruth, and forms a friendship with Charles Templeton. In addition, the film features performances by Martin Landau, Stefanie Butler, Lindsay Wagner and country singer Josh Turner as George Beverly Shea.

Thousand Foot Krutch song in Super Bowl Print Email

Thousand Foot Krutch's song "Fire It Up" from the Canadian Christian rock band's latest album, Welcome to the Masquerade (Tooth & Nail Records/EMI CMG Distribution), will be featured on the JumboTron at Miami's Sun Life Stadium during Super Bowl XLIV, scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 7.

NFL Network has also used the song on NFL Total Access, NFL Nike Rewind and NFL Game Day Morning.

The lighter side of Christian faith is explored in the new humor book Stuff Christians Like by Jonathan Acuff, who has found that touching people's funny bones can also touch their hearts.

Inspired by the author's popular blog--a takeoff of the successful "Stuff White People Like" blog--the Zondervan book releasing in April features essays on the quirky side of all things Christian. Topics include "Being slightly offended the pastor has a nicer car than you," "Telling testimonies that are exciting right up until the moment you became a Christian" and "Using 'Let me pray about it' as a euphemism for 'no.' "

Retailer and distributor gather ‘Bibles for India’ Print Email

A longtime Christian retailer and a leading evangelical distributor recently completed a "Bibles for India" project.

Hackman's Bible Book Store in Whitehall, Pa., and Anchor Distributors joined forces for the campaign, which collected more than 3,200 used Bibles last fall at the 62-year-old bookstore.

Cris Doornbos new chairman of ECPA Print Email

David C. Cook President and CEO Cris Doornbos is to be the new chairman of the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA).

A longtime senior executive before taking on the head role at the Colorado Springs, Colo.-based nonprofit in 2005, Doornbos will replace Thomas Nelson CEO Michael Hyatt when he steps down at the ECPA's Executive Leadership Summit and Annual Member Meeting in Nashville in May.
