Family Christian Stores, in partnership with Athletes in Action, is sponsoring the NFL-sanctioned Super Bowl Breakfast at the USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla., on Saturday, Jan. 31.

Former San Francisco 49er Brent Jones will emcee the outreach event that will feature the presentation of the Bart Starr Award to a current NFL player for outstanding character and leadership. Bart Starr, Tony Dungy, Derrick Brooks and Anthony Munoz will be on the program along with other NFL athletes and coaches.

Minister and author Jill Austin dies Print Email

Jill Austin, a veteran prophetic minister and founder of Master Potter Ministries, died Jan. 9 after complications involving two emergency surgeries.
“Our beloved Jill went home to be with Jesus,” read a statement on the Web site of Austin’s Laguna Hills, Calif.-based ministry. “Thank you all for standing with us and praying. She is now with her best friend, Holy Spirit, and dancing with her destiny.”

Israel Houghton to perform at Heroes Inaugural Ball Print Email

GRAMMY Award-winning artist Israel Houghton will appear at the 2009 Heroes Red, White & Blue Inaugural Ball held at the Warner Theatre in Washington tomorrow, Jan. 20.

The event will be executive-produced by GRAMMY-winning Nile Rodgers and hosted by Tiki Barber, sports broadcaster and former New York Giants running back.

Leon Patillo featured at inaugural event Print Email

Contemporary gospel artist and former Santana frontman Leon Patillo was to be the featured artist at the Inaugural Prayer Event tonight, Jan. 19, in Washington, D.C. Patillo was to debut his new song “United We Stand” with a live performance. The song can be downloaded at www.myspace.com/leonpatilloministries.

Patillo, who uses his musical talents at the Get Motivated Seminars, along with General Colin Powell, Mayor Rudy Giuliani, George Foreman and Suze Orman, said: “It was awesome to be asked to do the Inaugural Prayer Event. Anytime I can use my gift to influence those who affect our nation, God’s purpose is definitely being fulfilled.”

David C. Cook has instituted a new Vacation Bible School (VBS) program for Christian retailers, enabling them to capture a higher percentage of sales.

“Many times the initial purchase of VBS materials is made early in the year, before churches begin their summer VBS programs,” said Marilyn Largent, senior director of trade sales at David C. Cook. “Purchasing ancillary product at the time they order the kits doesn’t make sense for the consumer, but ordering additional product online is lost revenue for the bookstore. We have developed a simple solution that will benefit both the customer and the retailer.”

Holiday sales a ‘mixed bag’ Print Email

The 2008 Christmas season produced “a mixed bag” of results for Christian retailers, suppliers and publishers—but they sounded more upbeat than the gloomy reports from the worst U.S. holiday shopping period in nearly 40 years from the general market channel.

Sales at some of Mardel Christian & Education’s 27 stores were flat, according to President Jason Green, who noted that overall business increased thanks to strong openings at two new stores that launched during the Christmas season.

Christian retailers unable to attend the first major trade show of the year are being given an opportunity to make sure that they don’t miss out on some of the benefits of being there.
Video presentations from almost 90 exhibitors at The Gathering 2009 are being offered online by event organizers Christian Retailing. The informal short reports filmed live at the event feature key new products for the coming year and details of specials offered at the Jan. 7-9 show, with some participants extending their specials.

Fireflight to perform during Winter X Games 13 Print Email

Christian rock band Fireflight was scheduled to perform tomorrow, Jan. 23, during the Winter X Games 13, according to the group’s label, Flicker Records.

Named one of the three winners of Taco Bell’s inaugural “Best of the Beat” promotion, Fireflight will perform songs from the band's album Unbreakable.
