Fortress Press presented its teaching awards at this year's annual meeting of the American Academy of Religion and Society of Biblical Literature in Washington, D.C. The awards-one for teaching undergraduates and one for teaching graduates or seminarians-are given “in recognition of innovative teaching, unique approaches to subject areas or superb communication with today's students in biblical studies, religious studies, theology, ethics or ministry,” the publisher said in a statement. Candidates are nominated by peers. This year's awards, presented last month, were given to Anne Moore, undergraduate coordinator of the Department of Religious Studies for the University of Calgary, and Rebecca Abts Wright, professor of Old Testament at the School of Theology at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn., and an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church.
Moore was recognized for use of “inquiry-based learning” in her courses, the statement said, while Wright received the graduate/seminarian award for “bridging Methodist and Episcopal education” and “stressing how language works” in her teachings.
