Despite less-than-stellar reviews, the church-made movie Facing the Giants landed at No. 12 in its opening weekend, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com. With a budget of $100,000, it grossed nearly $1.4 million after debuting on only 441 screens.
Made by Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Ga., and released by Samuel Goldwyn Films and Destination Films, the movie's cast and crew consisted almost entirely of church volunteers. A statement from the movie's creators said that in 17 markets, booster clubs presold 1,000 tickets to ensure audience participation.
