Online bookstores are showing that titles by the former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, have made their best-seller lists.

Today, eight titles are in the top 25 at Amazon.com, including Introduction to Christianity, Salt of the Earth, Milestones: Memoirs 1927-1977 and Truth and Tolerance. All were published by Ignatius Press. At Barnesandnoble.com, Truth and Tolerance ranked No. 15.

Publishers across the country already are well into producing books on the new pontiff, elected Tuesday as a successor to Pope John Paul II.

Doubleday Religious Publishing announced plans for two books. Robert Moynihan, a veteran Vatican journalist, will edit an untitled collection of the new pope's writings. The second book, also untitled, by John L. Allen Jr., will be a biography of the pontiff. Allen, a writer for the National Catholic Reporter, is also the Vatican analyst for CNN and National Public Radio.

Catholic publisher Our Sunday Visitor (OSV) also is working on We Have a Pope by Matthew Bunson, editor of OSV's Encyclopedia of Catholic History. The book will explore how the pope is expected to shape the church.

Barnes & Noble is releasing a new book, Holy Father, by papal historian Greg Tobin. The book is scheduled for a May 19 release.

A complete story will run in the June 6 issue of Christian Retailing.
