Kerusso’s Lion Cross T-shirt was one of the highest-ranked designs in a company survey of consumers who wear Christian tees. The shirt also was unusual in that it trended high among men and women.

“Designs often skew towards one demo or another,” said Lorri Carter, vice president of creative development. “This design topped every age group and gender. We have only had a couple of designs perform this strongly in the past, so we have a ton of confidence in this one. Also, I post new designs on Facebook and this design really performs well on social media—lots of comments, likes and shares.”

Several years ago, the Christian apparel maker opted to begin conducting product research by survey, moving away from committees that determined new designs.

“We have an email database of about 1,000 verified Christian T-shirt-wearing consumers,” she said. “We send out a survey to them and get their feedback. This process has helped us to stay tuned in to what customers really like. They offer comments and vote for their favorites.”

The surveys also help Christian retailers determine which designs likely will sell in their stores.

“The accuracy of our surveys helps to assure store owners that the items that make our line are going to be great sellers,” Carter said. “Less than half of the designs we develop make the cut.”

This particular shirt follows a design trend. 

“We had been noticing a trend of large images of animal faces on T-shirts and naturally thought about doing a lion,” Carter said. “Adding the cross and scripture seemed appropriate—the Lion of Judah is such a strong word picture that resonates with so many believers. When we surveyed the shirt, it really performed well.”
