LifeWayStoreLogo-WebThough LifeWay’s initial goal was to donate 100,000 Bibles to individuals in South Asia, the project has been enormously successful, with the company’s website reporting that more than 138,000 Bibles were purchased by customers through Nov. 16.

LifeWay, B&H Publishing Group and the International Mission Board have joined forces on The Thomas Project, an initiative geared toward printing and distributing Bibles to people in South Asia, many of whom do not have access to the Scriptures in their native Hindi language.

Following in the footsteps of St. Thomas—believed to be the first Christian missionary to the region—the project invites customers at LifeWay’s 186 stores as well as on their online storefront to purchase a Bible for $5 to send to South Asia.

B&H—LifeWay Christian Resources’ trade books division—worked out the details of printing Bibles near the distribution location in South Asia, while LifeWay Christian Stores provided customers with the opportunity to fund this effort through their donations.

Bob Fuller, a retail store district director, told Baptist Press that the project is “a wonderful example of how all the diversity of LifeWay can come together in perfect alignment to advance the cause of the Gospel.”

LifeWay stores are not only selling the Bibles, but retail employees will also be part of a spring mission trip to South Asia to help deliver them. Because of the unique nature of the trip to South Asia, most of the 16 team members will be from B&H and from LifeWay’s retail division.

Fuller will be leading the team. He told Baptist Press that his previous experience in South Asia led him to quickly agree to be a part of the trip, calling it a “tremendous blessing.”
