Nelson sues over 'Gigi infringement' Print Email

Thomas Nelson has filed a federal lawsuit against Zondervan and an illustrator over a copyright infringement regarding its popular "Gigi, God's Little Princess" children's book series, The Tennessean reported.

In the lawsuit filed Nov. 13, Nelson claims that Zondervan's new "Princess Twins" children's books--released earlier this year--interfered with the Nashville publisher's business and that it had contracted with California illustrator Meredith Johnson to provide illustrations for children's books and related products for the "Gigi, God's Little Princess" series. The series' latest DVD--Gigi's First Day of School--was the top-selling Christian video for two weeks in September, according to SoundScan charts.

IBS-STL UK up for sale Print Email

The Christian retail industry in the U.K. was rocked this week with the announcement that its dominant player, IBS-STL UK, was up for sale.

The charity is looking for a buyer for its publishing, distribution and retail divisions after what it called "a succession of financial problems," including the failed implementation of a new computer system, were compounded by the economic downturn.

Religious book sales decline again Print Email

Sales of religious books sharply decreased, by 18.4%, in September, following a yearlong trend as overall book sales increased by 12.3% to $1.26 billion and were up by 3.6% for the year, according to the Association of American Publishers (AAP).

The month's sales for religious books were $67.4 million, with the category's sales down by 10.6% for the year. Sales of religious books have been on a steady decline, decreasing 13.8%, 9.3%, 22%, 12%, 7.1%, 11.4%, 19% and 9% in August, July, June, May, April, March, February and January, respectively.

Tennessee retailer wins Max Lucado prize Print Email

Mandy Smith, owner of the independent store Vine & Branches in Selmer, Tenn., has won a Max Lucado prize pack in Christian Retailing's Virtual Christmas Showcase Contest.

The prize pack includes five autographed copies of Lucado's latest release, Fearless, and a special holiday voice mail message from Lucado for Smith's store.

Christian retailers entering the contest were required to answer correctly three questions about the Virtual Christmas Showcase to win.

Online through Nov. 30, the showcase includes details of suppliers' key releases and special offers, plus interviews and new release spotlights to help make the Christmas season a success for Christian retail stores.

Youth With A Mission (YWAM) Publishing's specials for Christian retail stores are spotlighted in the Virtual Christmas Showcase, an online exhibition and training event hosted by Christian Retailing magazine and focused on the holiday season.

More than 20 suppliers--including Thomas Nelson International, Kregel Publications and Warner Press--have so far signed on for the Virtual Christmas Showcase. In addition to highlighting products and specials, the online event also includes interviews, new release spotlights and other offers. The virtual show has drawn more than 3,300 visits from nearly 60 countries since it began Sept. 30, with 7,500-plus page views.

Debbie Macomber's One Simple Act: Discovering the Power of Generosity (Howard Books) is to debut at No. 12 on the New York Times Hardcover Advice best-seller list for the week of Nov. 12.

Released earlier this month, the book is the first Howard title for Macomber--a New York Times best-selling novelist who has also done some nonfiction.

 
Bridge-Logos author Paul Meyer dies Print Email

Paul J. Meyer, author of 24 Keys That Bring Complete Success and Forgiveness...The Ultimate Miracle (both Bridge-Logos Foundation), died at his Waco, Texas home Oct. 26 while surrounded by his family. He was 81 and had battled cancer.

Meyer was a successful businessman, starting more than 150 companies, including Slight Edge Publishing and Success Motivation International, Bridge-Logos officials said.
