Publishers and retailers were given some insights into how the downturn in the economy has impacted book buyers, yesterday.

Sixty-four percent of all purchasers--57% of men and 69% of women--said their purchasing had changed in the first half of the year, said consumer research specialist , vice president of publisher services for R.R. Bowker, in a Consumer Book Trends Webinar hosted by the Association of American Publishers (AAP).

Religious book sales slide again Print Email

Continuing a yearlong trend, sales of religious books decreased 8.5% in October, while overall book sales increased by 10.2% to $725.8 million and were up by 4.1% for the year, according to the Association of American Publishers (AAP).

The month's sales for religious books were $60.3 million, with the category down by 10.7% for the year. Sales of religious books have been on a steady decline, decreasing 12.3%, 13.8%, 9.3%, 22%, 12%, 7.1%, 11.4%, 19% and 9% in September, August, July, June, May, April, March, February and January, respectively.

CBA may sell off headquarters Print Email

CBA's headquarters could be sold off, as the retail trade association reorganizes itself under new leadership.

Meanwhile, the group's board has speeded up its process for selecting a replacement for long-time president and CEO Bill Anderson, who stepped down in October.

Suppliers are invited to nominate their best releases of the year in the 2010 Retailers Choice Awards, starting today.

Before retailer voting begins in the Christian Retailing-sponsored competition--celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2010--suppliers will be nominating their best products of 2009. Books, Bibles, music and gifts are among those that may be nominated in 36 categories.

Christian Retailing Update incorrectly reported in its Dec. 10 issue that CBA Interim Executive Director Curtis Riskey is a former retailer. He is owner of Basic Books and Cafe in Oshkosh, Wis., though not active in its day-to-day operations.
 
Christian authors on ‘Good Morning America’ Print Email

Authors Max Lucado, Miles McPherson, Francine Rivers and Father Edward Beck recently joined ABC's Good Morning America host Robin Roberts to tape a special segment, which will air during the show's Christmas Day episode.

Contemporary Christian band Big Daddy Weave and K-LOVE Radio Network have launched a campaign to honor military families during Christmastime.

Influenced by "I'll Be Brave This Christmas," the new radio single from Big Daddy Weave's recently released Christ Is Come (Fervent Records/Word Distribution), the campaign seeks to celebrate and thank American soldiers by helping their families in need.
