Thistle Farms is a nonprofit business operated by the women of Magdalene, a two-year residential community in Nashville. Made by hand, the products-from body balm to candles and hand lotion-sell at retail for between $3.50 and $20.
"It's very important that customers know what we do-otherwise it's just a candle," said Marlei Olson, corporate marketing and community relations for Magdalene and Thistle Farms. "A condensed explanation of who we are and what we do is included on the packaging of every item we sell."
Since introducing its line at the International Christian Retail Show in July, Thistle Farms has been finishing designs for a floor display and is designing additional shelf pieces that tell its story. A series of display cards that shows images of the women making the products and tells some of their personal stories is also in the works.
Some area visits from the women of Magdalene and the organization's leaders may help with product sales.
"When possible, we love to share our work in person," Olson said. "We have spoken at hundreds of churches, Sunday school classes and women's groups and (have) told these stories of healing. When we can team with the store to visit them and their community, it makes the products all that more meaningful."
