Held April 10-12, the event featured 100 of Nelson's top account Christian retailers, who received training, inspiration and interaction at the Music City Sheraton in Nashville. The company covered all travel and accommodation expenses for hosting the invited guests, who came from across the country.
"I think we gauge success here by whether or not people leave more excited about their own business, more excited about their partnership with us and what we can do together," he told Christian Retailing.
A last-minute crisis was mostly averted when around 40 retailers had to be re-routed due to American Airlines' cancellation of hundreds of flights last week. In the end, one retail group and musical guest John Tesh were unable to attend. Mike Flynt, Thomas Nelson author of the upcoming memoir The Senior, replaced Tesh for a lunchtime program.
The retailers were treated to an opening worship session on Thursday evening, April 10, with Max Lucado and musical guests Sandi Patty, Jaci Velasquez, Heather Headley and Travis Cottrell. Workshop sessions featured John Maxwell, Andy Andrews, Michelle Miller, Tony Jeary and the Disney Institute's Tom Madden. Ventriloquist Taylor Mason presented a comedy routine.
Hyatt, who served as the host for the event, spoke on Saturday, taking questions from the audience and encouraging retailers with a lively speech that included "Ten Reasons I'm Excited About Christian Retail." "(Christian retail) is a gift that God has given us," he told the crowd.
Later that evening, the company hosted the retailers at Rocketown, the teen club co-founded by recording artist Michael W. Smith, featuring speakers Donald Miller, Dan Merchant and Chris Seay along with Jars of Clay.
Frank Hood, owner of Sweet Spirit Christian Bookstore in Marietta, Ga., said Open House "was a chance to have the spirit renewed, refreshed, to hear some challenging speakers, to go back for the 'second half' energized and ready to do battle."
Hyatt said plans are already being discussed for next year's Open House.
