Forty-nine publishers nominated 359 titles published last year for the publication's annual list of best books. Rather than naming one overall winner this year, Christianity Today editors selected the top books in each category, with panels of judges then choosing 10 winners and also recognizing 11 awards of merit.
A division of Baker Publishing Group, Baker Academic was recognized three times, including two book awards in the Biblical Studies category for The Jesus Legend by Paul Rhodes Eddy and Gregory A. Boyd, and Resounding Truth by Jeremy S. Begbie in the Theology/Ethics category. Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament by G.K. Beale and D.A. Carson was recognized with an award of merit in the Biblical Studies category.
"We've always been appreciative of the role (Christianity Today takes) in setting a high bar in Christian publishing," said Dwight Baker, president of Baker Publishing Group.
Other winners in the 19th annual listing were: Christian Living: Caring for Mother by Virginia Stem Owens (Westminster John Knox); Apologetics/Evangelism: There Is a God by Antony Flew with Roy Abraham Varghese (HarperOne); Christianity and Culture: Faith in the Halls of Power by D. Michael Lindsay (Oxford); Church/Pastoral Leadership: The Call to Joy and Pain by Ajith Fernando (Crossway Books).
Fiction: Quaker Summer by Lisa Samson (Thomas Nelson Publishers); History/Biography: A Secular Age by Charles Taylor (Belknap); Missions/Global Affairs: Disciples of All Nations by Lamin O. Sanneh (Oxford); Spirituality: The Jesus Way by Eugene H. Peterson (Eerdmans).
